Ackland and Edwards: Read Between the Lines @ The Burton Art Gallery

EXHIBITION : 5th February - 9th March 2015

The Burton Art Gallery have recently started going through their archives of material left behind by the artists Mary Stella Edwards and Judith Ackland. The collection consists of photographs, watercolours, sketchbooks, press clippings, diaries, letters, Jackanda models and various items made between 1913 and 1956 by the artists. The body of work was presented to the Burton Art Gallery by Mary Stella Edwards and is being uncovered by volunteers.

Ackland and Edwards: Read Between the Lines gives the public an opportunity to learn about the lives of the artists during the time they spent at The Cabin in Bucks Mills. The watercolours and photographs, accompanied by poems and letter extracts, paint a vibrant picture of what the women's lives were like. It was very interesting to see this selection of their work and artefacts on display. The exhibition had a huge sense of nostalgia. Ackland and Edwards had such a passionate and beautiful friendship, I can only imagine how wonderful it must have been for them to get away to The Cabin and spend time with each other each year.

This exhibition is a must see for any local history and art enthusiast!
