"From a distance, Woollacott's work seems almost photographic"

Mike Woollacott is a Devon based painter specialising in landscapes. His work captures the rural beauty of the North Devon countryside in sometimes unexpected places such as ditches, puddles and dull estuaries. From a distance Woollacottt's work seems almost photographic, however, on close observation we can see that his brush strokes and painting technique are far from uniformed. Last weekend I had the privilege of visiting his studio for the second time.

Woollacott also sketches using charcoals, pens...

and watercolours!

Breathtaking detail! His painting style captures the raw, natural beauty of the countryside
The acrylic paint used in Woollacott's paintings tend to be organic and tertiary in their hue. They give the painting an undeniably warm familiarity. The composition and application of paint is airy and light, I believe this is caused by the splatters which are clearly the perfect viscosity as they are not thick and do not have that water like weakness to them either which gives them a suspended-in-air look. The whole feel of his paintings tends to have a serene calmness which may, or may not be, as a result of him painting a reflection of our relationship with nature. I think the positive attributes given off by the paintings are interpretable due to the mirroring of the atmosphere manifested in the landscape.
